About Allen

Allen McKay has called St. Catharines home for many years and believes City Hall should focus on taxpayers, transparency, safe neighbourhoods, and practical results.

Allen has been actively involved with the Property Taxpayers Alliance, advocating for responsible spending, accountability and ensuring residents receive value for their tax dollars.

Through his experience working for the Region of Niagara, Allen has gained firsthand insight into how local government operates and understands the importance of efficient services, strong community partnerships and practical solutions.

Allen McKay has never been afraid to speak up when residents and taxpayers are being ignored. Recognizing the growing strain on families across Niagara, Allen appeared before a provincial steering committee to advocate for meaningful governance changes and highlight the real impacts ineffective municipal structures and decision-making were having on taxpayers throughout the region.

He brought forward the concerns of everyday residents who were increasingly burdened by rising costs and looking for greater accountability from local government.

Allen has also stood before City Council to speak out against massive property tax increases, challenging decisions that place additional financial pressure on homeowners, seniors and working families. While others remained silent, Allen consistently chose to stand up, ask difficult questions and ensure taxpayers had a voice at the table.

For Allen, leadership is not about showing up when it's easy — it's about standing up when it matters most. He is running to bring accountability, common sense and a results-focused approach back to municipal government.

My Priorities for St. Patrick's Ward

Select a priority below to jump into more details.

Protecting Taxpayers
Residents are feeling squeezed by rising costs, and many are frustrated after experiencing one of the largest property tax increases in St. Catharines history. Families, seniors and people on fixed incomes cannot continue absorbing large increases year after year.

I believe City Hall must return to core priorities and responsible budgeting. I will push to keep future increases at or below inflation whenever possible, review spending for efficiencies, and make sure taxpayers receive value for every dollar spent.
Cleaning Up the Former GM Lands
Residents have grown frustrated by years of delay and a lack of visible progress at the former GM properties. One of the city's largest redevelopment opportunities has remained largely stagnant while nearby residents continue to live beside uncertainty.

I will push for timelines, transparency and action. These lands should create opportunity through jobs, investment, responsible development and neighbourhood revitalization — not continue as a symbol of inaction.
Transparency & Accountability
Too many residents feel disconnected from City Hall and don't understand how decisions are made. Government works best when residents feel informed and involved.

I will provide regular updates, communicate major decisions clearly, and push for openness so taxpayers understand where their money goes and why decisions are made.

Transparency should also mean creating a City Hall that works better for residents, investors and local businesses. I will advocate for changes that support local business growth, reduce unnecessary bureaucracy and create smoother, more efficient approval processes for new developments.

City Hall should be a partner in building our community — not a roadblock.
Supporting Local Businesses
Small businesses create jobs, strengthen neighbourhoods and build community pride. Too often, business owners face delays, unnecessary red tape and barriers.

A thriving downtown also depends on people feeling safe and welcome. I want to help create a safe, clean and inviting environment where residents, visitors and businesses can succeed.

I will push for stronger collaboration with law enforcement and advocate for a stronger police presence in key areas of the downtown to improve safety, support local businesses and help restore confidence in our city core.

I have heard directly from local business owners, entrepreneurs and developers frustrated by delays, red tape and lengthy approval processes.

I believe City Hall should be a partner in progress — responsive, efficient and accountable. Businesses and residents deserve clear communication and timely decisions.

When approvals stall, opportunities are delayed and costs increase. I am committed to supporting a more efficient process that encourages investment, responsible growth and stronger service for residents and businesses alike.

I want to make St. Catharines easier to invest in by reducing obstacles and helping local businesses thrive.

Community Endorsements

Support from residents, community members and local leaders who believe St. Patrick's Ward deserves accountable leadership and real results.

"The Property Taxpayers Alliance of Ontario has followed Al's work on behalf of Niagara Region property taxpayers for several years. His focus on exposing municipal waste and proposing better value for residents' hard-earned property tax dollars is legendary.

Al will make an excellent councillor for Ward 4, St. Patrick's in St. Catharines. He will fight tirelessly for his constituents, making sure their voices are heard at City Hall. Please give your support to Al McKay in the upcoming Fall election."

"As a resident living next door to the former GM site, I have spent years raising concerns and calling for action on a property that has too often felt ignored. Time and time again, residents like myself have spoken up, only to feel our voices go unanswered.

After being diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer, I could not help but question whether years of living beside this property may have played a role. While I cannot say with certainty, the lack of answers, transparency and meaningful action has only added to the frustration many in our neighbourhood continue to feel.

That is why I support Allen McKay for St. Patrick's Ward Councillor. Allen has shown a willingness to listen to residents, ask difficult questions and fight for accountability on issues that directly impact our community. We need a representative who will ensure residents are not ignored when they ask for action."

– Susan and Glenn, St. Patrick's Ward Residents

"As a business owner in Downtown St. Catharines, I have witnessed significant challenges facing our downtown core. Coupled with rising taxes and water bills, many residents and businesses have felt increasing pressure over the last four years.

Having known Allen McKay for many years, I am confident he will bring fiscal responsibility and efficiency to City Hall. Al will work to help make our downtown streets safer and push for a comprehensive plan to address the former GM site on Ontario Street — an issue many residents feel has lacked urgency for far too long."

– Andrew Gill, Downtown Business Owner
